SDCEA Executive Board Meeting

Tuesday, April 22, 2003, 1:30 PM

Meeting was called to order by Bob Fanning.

Business – Proposed meeting with the Governor

Bob made several contacts to find out their feelings on the meeting.

Why do we want to do it? Do we want to do it? Is there an issue? If we think Governor Rounds is NOT getting the message that we want him to get.

Supportive of the mission to Governor Rounds. Needs to be very positive. Do not go with complaints. Do not ask for money.

Collaborative between Specialists and Educators – reinforcing what Administration is already doing. It seems that we do have some advocates in Pierre.

Is there a way to say “Thank You?” Perhaps a meal. Support letter or thank you letter. Key things we have cooperated with other state agencies.

Come to me with an idea, but if we had the resources we would like to do this. Economic impact growth.

Economic Development Issues – High speed Internet access in many areas – could we help the people to get high paying jobs in their local communities?

State Fair – Invite Governor Rounds to come to the State Fair.

Drought related programming.

Get thoughts from Administration before we go.

V-tel might be used to connect other sites across the state.

Should we pursue it or not? Is it going to look like over-kill? Advocate program might be the route to go talk to the government. Grass roots goes back to the clientele not paid employees.

Building high speed Internet into Extension Offices might be a top priority.

Do we scrap? Go ahead? Motion made by Cody Wright to go back to the Associations and ask what they think. No second came for this motion.

Council Ambassadors could show Governor Rounds around the State Fair – Extension booth, etc.

Report back from the Associations to the SDCEA Executive Board. Let President Bob know.

Pros, cons, subjects that were discussed:

Should we do it? Have the Associations discuss it at their upcoming meetings. Pros, cons, formats we should use.

Need lead time to decide what we are doing at the meeting with the Governor.
